Please help give these cats the second chance they deserve!

Russ and Laura live within the city of Manistee. A few weeks ago, the tenant renting the one-bedroom house across the street was evicted. The door was locked and windows were shut. Russ started to notice a few cats in the window and called the police. The windows were always covered, so this was not noticeable prior. The police were aware but were told someone was taking care of them. Russ informed them that no one had been there in the past 4 days, and these were hot summer days, 85-90° temps with closed windows. After many calls and inquiries, Russ and Laura learned our local shelter came in and took 30 cats out after the tenant had surrendered them but needed to wear Hazmat suits to do so. They could not take any more because they were at capacity and did not have the resources or staff. They made arrangements for someone connected to the tenant to feed them until a solution could be found. That person showed up at first but eventually stopped coming. Russ reached out to shelters from Traverse City to Muskegon for help. Unfortunately, they were all at capacity as well. Their hearts went out to the remaining cats, not knowing how many were even left, and felt they had to act. They reached out to friends for help and over the course of several days, trapped an additional 35 cats. Without hesitation, they created a holding area in their garage. Laura went on social media to request help with supplies. Friends in the community brought cages, food, litter, and blankets/sheets. Community Cats of Benzie County took on the task of spaying/neutering, giving needed shots, and treating them for fleas, ticks, eye, and ear infections. Sadly, 2 had to be euthanized. The vet has been very generous, but this is a significant number of kitties and help is needed for the medical costs. These poor fur-babies were living in their own feces and urine stuck in this house. The conditions were atrocious! The ammonia smell was so strong coming across the street, Russ and Laura began to feel ill. Imagine what it was like for these innocent kitties stuck inside. They were dehydrated, malnourished, full of flea bites, mats, and filthy, along with other medical issues that needed to be addressed. They are now eating more and more each day. They crave affection. Please join us by helping to give them the life they deserve. Your donation is needed for medical costs and other various expenses. This has been an ambitious and exhausting undertaking, but needed to happen. We would also like to pursue policy, or law, or look to enforce existing laws so this does not continue to happen. Thank you for caring and thank you to everyone who has donated food and supplies. It is all being put to good use and so greatly appreciated.
