We are reaching out again for McKenna and her family, and this is an incredibly difficult update to share.
McKenna has been diagnosed with CIC-rearranged sarcoma, a very rare and aggressive form of cancer. Over the course of this journey, she has undergone multiple brain surgeries to remove tumours. After everything she had already been through, she received a clear brain scan, and for a while there was so much hope that she might finally be able to start moving forward.
Unfortunately, within the last few months, tumours returned in her brain, and McKenna has recently undergone yet another brain surgery to remove them.
We have also received the devastating news that the cancer has metastasized. This means it has spread beyond its original location and tumours have now been found in other areas of her body. With CIC-rearranged sarcoma being so rare, aggressive and fast-growing, this progression has made an already incredibly difficult situation even more urgent.
McKenna has already endured more than most of us could imagine. Multiple surgeries, treatments, medications, IV therapies, countless appointments and hospital stays, and she continues to keep going.
At this point, the options available to her in Canada have become very limited. But McKenna is not giving up, and neither are the people who love her.
She wants what any mother would want: every possible chance to be here for her children, to raise them, watch them grow and have as much time with them as possible. McKenna and her husband Brent have two very young children, just 2 and 5 years old. They are her entire world and such a huge part of why she continues to push forward.
The family is now exploring treatment options outside of Canada, where specialists and treatment centres may be able to offer options for this extremely rare cancer that are not currently available to her here. Germany is one of the countries being explored, along with other international treatment centres.
Seeking treatment outside of Canada, however, comes with an enormous financial cost. There will be expenses for specialized treatments and consultations, international travel, accommodations, transportation, medications, ongoing medical care, food and simply living away from home for however long is necessary.
Brent will also need to be with McKenna and their children as much as possible, which means time away from work and lost income at the exact time their expenses are becoming greater.
Anyone who knows McKenna and Brent knows that asking for help does not come easily to them. They are the type of people who would much rather figure things out themselves than ask others for money. But this has reached a point where no family should feel they have to carry all of this alone.
We love McKenna deeply, and we don’t want her or Brent worrying about selling belongings or wondering how they are going to afford the next possible treatment. Their energy needs to go toward McKenna, finding the best care available to her and keeping their family together through everything ahead.
That is why we are reaching out to family, friends, our community and beyond.
If you are able to help, please consider donating. Every contribution matters, no matter the amount. When enough people come together, even $5, $10 or $20 adds up and can make a very real difference in helping this family pursue every possible option available to McKenna.
If you aren’t able to donate, please share this post. The farther McKenna’s story reaches, the greater the possibility of finding additional support, resources or even connections that could help this family navigate what comes next.
All donations will go toward medical and treatment costs, international travel and care expenses, accommodations and living expenses while away from home, medications, appointments and the many other costs that come with seeking specialized treatment.
McKenna still has hope. As long as there are options to explore, we want to help make sure finances aren’t the reason she can’t explore them.
She is a wife, a daughter, a friend, and most importantly, a mom to two very little children who need her more than anything in this world.
Please help us take some of the financial weight off this family so they can focus on what matters most right now! ♥️ Getting McKenna the best care possible and giving her every possible chance to be here with her babies. ❤️
