My name is Crystal Burton, and I’m raising funds for my parents, Beulah and Guy, to purchase a wheelchair-accessible vehicle with hand controls. Depending on the funds raised I may have to modify a regular vehicle that also would need to be purchase. In 2017, they were in a devastating accident that changed their lives forever. The brand new truck they were in flipped multiple times due to a chassis malfunction. Following the accident, they faced a lengthy lawsuit against a major car company, which ultimately yielded no results. They lost their jobs, independence, and mental well-being. My father, diagnosed with MS after the accident, struggles daily with mobility and depression. Modifying a vehicle would allow him to reclaim his love for driving and maintain some independence.
My mom's physical disability worsened after an accident, making mobility challenging; she uses a walker and scooter, struggles to stand, and requires help getting up. Her mental health has declined significantly, leading to extreme depression and dissociation, as she spends most of her time playing games on her phone. She has PTSD and will only travel in vehicles my dad drives, as she is a dialysis patient needing frequent hospital visits. A wheelchair-accessible van would greatly improve their independence and quality of life, offering opportunities for road trips and enjoyment. I'm seeking help to make this dream a reality, as modified vehicles are expensive, and Newfoundland lacks funding support. Thank you
