On July 1st, I got a call from my sister (who is a social worker) about a severely neglected dog, a little 6 m/o Frenchie named Luna whose owners wanted out. They crated her all day and night and she was neglected to say the least. While we weren't looking to get another dog and this wasn't a good time at all, I knew the dog was slowly dying if left in the previous owner's care. My intent was to get her healthy and into the home of loving people.
Luna showed up at our door on July 4th skin and bones. The owner literally dropped her and left in 3 minutes flat. I took her to the vet the next day and they ran her blood work to check for worms (Piedmont hills animal clinic) as she was severely underweight (5 lbs). She came up totally clean. She was vaccinated but not spayed. Her liver numbers were alarming and she could possibly have a shunt. More tests. An ultrasound, a CT and 4K in vet bills later and it was determined that Luna has a rare type of liver shunt -- one that is actually in the liver as opposed to outside the liver or an intra-hepatic porto-systemic shunt. If she doesn't get this surgery, she will die of liver failure. Moreover, there is a rush to get it done as her health has been so poorly compromised because of it. This poor girl needs a procedure that can only be done at only a handful of places in the US. The only place in NorCal is UC Davis. The procedure costs between 8-10k.
This has been a huge burden on us as we were stretched with the 4k hit we have taken in like 3/4 days. Moreover, we took her away from a neglectful owner that was letting her slowly die :( If we can get help to get to 1/2 of it, we will find a way to cover the other half. Thank you for reading this.
