Dear friends & family,

If you know Frankie & Elena Fontanez, then you know what joy, strong faith, agape love, self-sacrifice, and unbreakable loyalty to Jehovah looks like. Everyone who knows them has felt their love, genuine care and witnessed their deep love for Jehovah and his people. If you don’t know them personally, then maybe you know someone who loves them and has told you what wonderful, beautiful humans they are.

As Jehovah’s Witnesses, they have spent their entire lives together faithfully serving their God in so many ways including pioneering, serving in various congregations when asked and studying the Bible with countless loved ones, helping them get to know Jehovah and come to love Him. While Frankie & Elena never had children of their own, these bible students along with young ones in the congregation are their spiritual children, in addition to their nieces and nephews who so affectionately call them Titi Elena & Uncle Frankie. They have loved, cared for, protected and guided their nieces and nephews as their own children. And they continue to do all these things no matter how old we get! This fundraiser is a way to try and return all the love they have shown us while never asking for anything in return.

Uncle Frankie has served as a loving, warm, humble elder and shepherd for decades while also working with the Hospital Laison Committee, visiting and comforting friends who were struggling with their own health challenges.

Uncle Frankie knows all too well the toll of what a life-altering medical diagnosis feels like. When he was 19 years old, he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system attacks the nerves causing his body to be almost fully paralyzed and was on a ventilator for 3 months. He eventually recovered enough to live a full, active life.

We thought a life of paralysis was behind him. But in June 2023, he received the devastating diagnosis of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), a fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It slowly takes away your ability to move, to speak, to swallow, and eventually, to breathe, all while the mind remains fully aware. There is currently no cure.

While this is an awful, unfair, and unforgiving disease, Titi Elena & Uncle Frankie are choosing joy every day amidst the unfathomable challenges. They are still living as fully as they can. Jehovah continues to give them the physical, emotional and spiritual strength needed to brave through each day. We know they are deeply grateful for the practical and financial help they have received thus far from friends and family. We’re hoping with this fundraiser, we can create a more organized, streamlined way to continue helping them.

As Uncle Frankie’s ALS continues to progress, so do their expenses. They are desperately trying to keep up with his body’s progression, purchasing equipment needed that insurance doesn’t cover, but that preserves Uncle Frankie’s dignity and quality of life. Titi Elena is still working while caregiving and Uncle Frankie does receive disability payments, but living with ALS requires so much more than what they have coming in, especially as a couple who prioritized giving their all to Jehovah over material wealth.

o In-home support and daily care costs as the disease progresses

o Increasing living expenses that are out of their control

Please help us help them. Any “two coins” would alleviate at least some of this incomprehensible weight that they are carrying every day. These funds will not only give them the financial help that they so very much need, but it’s also a way to show them how deeply they are loved and supported.

Nuestros queridos amigos y familia,

Si conocen a Frankie y Elena Fontanez, conocen lo que significan la felicidad, la fe firme, el amor ágape, la abnegación y la lealtad inquebrantable a Jehová. Quienes los conocen han sentido su amor y su cariño genuino, y han sido testigos de su profundo amor por Jehová y su pueblo. Si no los conoces personalmente, quizás conozcas a alguien que los ama y te ha contado cuan hermosas personas son.

Como testigos de Jehová, han dedicado toda su vida a servir fielmente a su Dios de diversas maneras, incluyendo el precursorado, dispuestos a servir en diversas congregaciones cuando se les solicitaba, conduciendo estudios de la Biblia con innumerables seres queridos, ayudándolos a conocer a Jehová y a amarlo. Si bien Frankie y Elena nunca tuvieron hijos propios, estos estudiantes de la Biblia, junto con los jóvenes de la congregación, son sus hijos espirituales, además de sus sobrinos y sobrinas, quienes con cariño los llaman Titi Elena y Tío Frankie. Los han amado, cuidado, protegido y guiado como a sus propios hijos. ¡Y siguen haciendo todo esto sin importar la edad que tengamos! Tío Frankie ha servido como un anciano y pastor humilde, cariñoso y cálido durante décadas. También ha servido como miembro del Comité de Enlace de Hospitales, visitando y consolando a hermanos que luchaban con sus propios problemas de salud.

Tío Frankie conoce muy bien el impacto de un diagnóstico médico que te cambia la vida. A los 19 años, le diagnosticaron el síndrome de Guillain-Barré (SGB), un trastorno autoinmune poco común en el que el sistema inmunitario ataca los nervios, lo que le provocó una parálisis casi total y estuvo conectado a un respirador durante tres meses. Finalmente, se recuperó lo suficiente como para llevar una vida plena y activa.

Pensábamos que una vida de parálisis había quedado atrás. Pero en junio de 2023, recibió el devastador diagnóstico de ELA (esclerosis lateral amiotrófica, también conocida como enfermedad de Lou Gehrig), una enfermedad neurodegenerativa mortal que afecta las células nerviosas del cerebro y la médula espinal. Poco a poco, va robando la capacidad de moverse, hablar, tragar y, finalmente, respirar, mientras la mente permanece plenamente consciente. Actualmente no existe cura.

Aunque esta es una enfermedad terrible, injusta e implacable, Titi Elena y Tío Frankie eligen estar felices cada día en medio de los desafíos inimaginables. Siguen viviendo al máximo. Jehová continúa dándoles la fuerza física, emocional y espiritual necesaria para afrontar cada día. Sabemos que están profundamente agradecidos por la ayuda práctica y económica que han recibido hasta ahora de sus amigos y familiares. Esperamos que con esta recaudación de fondos podamos crear una forma más organizada y eficiente de seguir ayudándolos.

A medida que la ELA del Tío Frankie avanza, también lo hacen sus gastos. Se esfuerzan desesperadamente por seguir al paso de su evolución, comprando el equipo necesario que el seguro no cubre, pero que preserva la dignidad y la calidad de vida de Tío Frankie. Titi Elena sigue trabajando mientras lo cuida, y Tío Frankie recibe los beneficios por discapacidad, pero vivir con ELA exige mucho más de lo que reciben, especialmente para una pareja que han puesto en primer lugar su servicio a Jehová sobre la riqueza material.
