Hello all,
George and I have taken a few days to digest the painful feelings of being separated from our 12-year-old highly medically-complex child in residential care in Norfolk, VA. (A quick background: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, 1135 waivers were granted to states from the federal government to restrict all visitors in nursing homes and long-term care facilities.) My son was swept up in this, as he is a resident of one of the best, if not THE BEST, pediatric residential facilities for children with complex health conditions in United States - St. Mary’s Home for Disabled Children. They are a non-profit, 501c3 and house 12 adults and 88 children.
Friends and family have reached out and asked us what they could do to help; and we could not be more grateful for the messages, calls, thoughts, and letters we have received. We have racked our brains for the best way to move forward in this pandemic, and while we will continue to reach out to the powers-at-be at the CDC and CMS and various legislative representatives, we now ask you all to help donate to feed the people at St. Marys keeping Jackson and his 89 roomies alive and well.
We want the staff at St. Mary’s home to know how much we love and support them. We have worked alongside of them for almost 6 years, and they are magical, dedicated people. They are sacrificing so much to give our children the best chance at surviving this virus, and they must do it alone. No parents to help, no school to offset the day- for the foreseeable future. They are on their own and have been for 3 weeks. They are the real unseen heroes. So, we as his parents, would love to be able to show them in the universal-love-language of FOOD how much we care for them as they are caring for our very fragile children.
We are hoping to provide free lunches for each unit during the month of April/May, and beyond if possible! There are 4 living units at St. Mary’s, and I am budging about 30 staff on each shift.
My hope is to pair with local Hampton Roads restaurants to support the struggling restaurant businesses in our city. If we can’t raise enough to give each unit a lunch, I will give all the money to buying out the vending machine in the building, so at least, they can get snacks for free.
Please consider donating to help feed the St. Mary’s staff as they navigate these uncharted waters.
