Meet Duncan and Meg Backus. Duncan was born and raised in Orem, Utah and moved to Taiwan in his early adult life and lives in Taichung with his beautiful wife, Meg. This amazing couple is needing our help. In 2019, Duncan and Meg invested all of their retirement and savings to open an adorable coffee shop, Gene's Coffee. Unfortunately, very soon after opening, before they could get their footings in the business, the pandemic hit. Their dreams were abruptly challenged by COVID-19 and the subsequent shutdowns, which, if you recall, were extremely severe in Asia.
To make matters worse, Duncan has suffered from severe amoebic infections in his eye. After having three corneal transplant surgeries, they were ultimately unsuccessful leaving him with blindness in that eye and heavy medical bills. He also suffers from trigeminal neuralgia, which has left him with difficulty to speak clearly. That combined with his eye has left him unable to teach English as a profession as he once did. This coffee shop was their only source of income. Despite their relentless efforts and dedication, the combined impact of these hardships has pushed Gene's Coffee to the brink. We are humbly seeking your help to keep their small business afloat and to provide some relief during this incredibly difficult time. Your support means the world to us and will help ensure that their only means of livelihood does not slip away.
