I have been boarding my 4 mini dachshunds with Donna at Sahuaro Dachshund Rescue for years. Last week, when I was picking up my dogs, she was clearly distraught. Her pregnant dog Etta had been rushed to the ER unable to eat or drink, was vomiting, and could barely move. She was still there when I left.

This was Etta's first litter, which Donna had planned carefully as a responsible occasional wirehaired dachshund show breeder of over 50 years, in addition to her dachshund rescue activities. She runs the rescue all by herself at the age of almost 80 and has saved countless dogs and found them good homes. We have two of her rescues and we trust her with our two longhaired Kenmar Hounds.

Etta was carrying 7 puppies that were so huge that they took up her entire abdomen and were pushing on her stomach. Her body could not get enough nutrients and energy and her body began to metabolize its own protein and fat reserves, creating a toxic ketone buildup. She needed a blood transfusion and had to have an emergency C-section to remove the puppies, which were unable to survive, and they had to spay her for her own survival.

The vet bills total almost $12,000, which is way beyond Donna's means. At almost 80 and retired, she will never be able to pay that back and has for now, applied for the vet's credit program. She will have difficulties making monthly payments on the credit program as well. Donna could not make any decision but to try to save her at any cost. There was never any question in her mind or heart.

I have known Donna for over 10 years and I feel compelled to do what I can to help her through this traumatic time. I have seen the vet bills and notes and want to do everything I can do to help her out.
