David Mattison was a hardworking blue-collar man! When someone needed help, information, or just an idea, they would come to David.

We tragically lost my dad on 7/15/25 at the young age of 67. After months of trying to overcome battles from open-heart surgery. Below is a brief journey of the last 3 months of his fight. This is a lot of information but a breakdown of what he has gone through and us this past 3 months.

He went in on March 19th for a quadruple bypass with valve replacement. When they were done with surgery, the doctor noticed the valve he replaced was leaking, so they stopped the heart again and opened him up again. They realized they didn't close the sutures correctly when they placed the valve in! So malpractice! After 9.5 hours of surgery, they over-sedated the already weak respiratory system, and he went into respiratory failure. He was on a ventilator for 33 days, 13 days of 100 percent machine. On the 6th day of the machine, he had multiple mini-strokes. When they got him stable enough, they weaned him off the ventilator and inserted a trach, then a feeding tube. He was in Albany Med for 6 weeks ICU. Then he was transferred to rehab after getting better, for rehab to learn how to walk all over again. He was at rehab and ended up with a bad infection UTI and had another mini-stroke. He was able to overcome the trach; we had it removed. Then on May 30th, they stopped the tube feed as he was able to eat pureed food. He was gaining strength; at this point, he had lost 53 lbs. He was gaining, ended back in the hospital with another infection, and we fought to have him transferred out of that rehab to another rehab. He was at this new rehab doing great! He had encephalopathy that developed from all the meds they had him on; it affected his brain with some cognitive issues. He was on meds to help with that. My dad worked so hard to build his strength back. He was supposed to come home on 7/17/2025. He was so excited to get home and relax on his deck and get to go fishing!!! He LOVES HIS FISHING!!

Sunday, 7/13/2025, he got up, got dressed, and told the nurse he didn't feel well. He collapsed on his bed. The ambulance took him to the hospital, and we went over. They did some tests to find out he had aspiration pneumonia. Sunday night, 7/13/2025, at 6:30, he coded blue, and they brought him back for the 3rd time during this process. He suffered another heart attack and another stroke. This stroke affected the last part of his brain, the brain stem. He's been unresponsive since. They told us his brain isn't responding. He was on 100% life support. He didn't want to go through this. He was tired of fighting. My dad was declared brain dead on 7/15/2025.

My mom and I have agreed that his organs needed to be donated. He was always helping people, friends, family, strangers... this is our way of helping someone else. David would have wanted this.

If you could help us now lay my dad to rest, anything will help my mom with this and not stress about the cost of burials and funerals.

Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts. He will now save someone else's life with his organ donations.
