Please help BYO keep it's doors open

Hi, My name is Tanya; I set up BYO in Tooting Market in 2018.

 

BYO is a zero waste shop based in the heart of Tooting in the vibrant and ever-changing Tooting Market (not to be confused with Broadway Market)

I always imagined that BYO would be at the heart of the community. However, to future-proof the business, I would like to move to a Co-op/Community project-based model with local people investing their enthusiasm and know-how to continue the zero-waste ethos.

 

Post pandemic, zero waste shops across the country were affected by a change in consumer shopping habits. Customers once dedicated to shopping more sustainably have stuck with their pandemic supermarket delivery, or perhaps post covid; it feels safer to have food wrapped in plastic.  This shift is devastatingly impacting zero-waste shops across the country, and we have seen many of our friends close their doors.

Without a doubt, it feels like we have bigger problems on our minds, rising prices, and conflict looming on the geopolitical horizon. Still, zero waste shopping need not be a casualty of the current climate but can be a way to bring cheaper high-quality food and products to the community and reduce our impact on our planet.

 

Shops like BYO put pressure on the government and supermarkets to keep considering the impact big business has on our planet. Without this pressure, big business will continue with its greenwashing and make no real change.
