Our 1 year old cockerpoo Bruno has a rare congenital abnormality: an intrahepatic liver shunt. This means his body can’t get rid of toxins through the liver and his kidneys have to work extra hard. This is why he drinks about 4 to 5 litres of water a day with the result that he can’t control his bladder properly, resulting in accidents all over the house. He has been on medication since May 2019 and initially improved slightly but sadly not a lot. Conservative surgery is deemed too risky with high chance of him bleeding out on the table, so specialists surgery would be the only way to cure him. This is a complicated, time consuming procedure and requires a catheter to find the abnormal vessel and coil insertion to close it. I have been given a 80% chance of success but of course there are possible complications such as liver failure. The operation in the UK has been quoted as 9k to 11k. I have enquired about options to have this done elsewhere and whilst it is cheaper abroad, I cannot get the time off to travel with the dog back and forwards given I have a 10 year old boy at home and work full time. We have had Bruno since March 2019 and it took. 2 months to have him diagnosed. He is insured but only for max 4k as I never thought a new pup would need more cover. My little family has tried to cope with his disease for nearly a year now and we are at the end of our tether. He has not much bladder or bowel control, hence my floors, carpets and furniture are all damaged. He has a small outside area but doesn’t always make it in time. He is impossible to properly house train and I get hardly any sleep due to him being thirsty, upset, in pain at night. We love our Bruno very much. He is affectionate and loving, he brings laughter and fun into our house but also many tears. I have thought about re- homing but I can’t see how anyone would be able to cope with a dog who does his business inside the house. I have tried several charities to help but most said that they won’t take him as he is not rehomeable. I also don’t want him to end up in a kennel without the prospect of a good life. This is where we are: he is too poorly to be rehomed and too well to be put down. Nobody can tell us how long he will live.. some dogs survive years, others will go into liver failure or develop kidney stones etc earlier. I am exhausted and my 10 year old is suffering too from not knowing what is going to happen. My older boy who is at uni has also grown very fond  of the little guy.  Having dealt with more or less a year of sleepless nights , getting through 100 puppy pads a week and litres of carpet cleaner, not to mention the ruined wooden floors and the vet bills, I have decided to try and raise the funds for his operation to give him another chance of life. If I can’t raise the money or Bruno is too poorly by the time I raised the money, I will donate the money to the last chance animal rescue. ( Sorry about some of the pics but it is our reality and the reason why we can’t continue like this anymore)
