Please Help Brodie reach his goals
Donation protected
Hi my name is Mel, I am Brodies mum.
I have created this fundraiser as I’ve had numerous people telling me to do it to help Brodie reach goals so here we are.
Brodie was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy when he was 5.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe type of muscular dystrophy that primarily affects boys.
Muscle weakness usually begins around the age of four, and worsens quickly. Muscle loss typically occurs first in the thighs and pelvis followed by the arms. This can result in trouble standing up. Most are unable to walk by the age of 12. In Brodies case he stopped walking over a year ago.
Brodie has struggled over the years. Watching other kids run and play and do all the things he wishes he was able to do.
Simple things like a jumping castle he’s never gotten to experience as he didn’t have the strength.
Trying to find a sport that interested him has always been a mission due to his disease and limitations.
Brodie absolutely loves Holdens and the v8’s and watches all the races and is literally obsessed with them. He hopes to be a race car driver!
Brodie has always had an interest in horses. He’s always come outside when we work and groom them and each time we have a foal born he’s out there to watch and meet the babies.
These days it’s difficult as he can no longer walk so I have to carry him in to sit on a milk crate so he can meet the foals.
April, I was lucky enough to purchase back his sisters pony promise for him to have a go at showing. He was absolutely over the moon having promise home and being able to lead her around and, even happier to be able to do a show and have fun.
He’s loving looking after her and grooming her everyday and looks forward to each show and just loves showing his pony with the bonus of ribbons. He hopes to win some trophies with her!!
It’s given him a new light on life, having something to look forward to and talk about.
As you can imagine just having this disease brings a lot of stress and heartache on the family as well as poor Brodie. We all suffer with him everyday watching him rapidly decline. Along with all that stress we are at constant fights with the NDIS constantly declining things he should have had over a year ago.
Brodie can no longer walk thanks to school negligence taking him off his feet sooner which means he is lifted in and out of the shower , car etc.
If he slips and falls in a transfer it’s a mission getting him off the ground. I’ve had 2 major surgeries this year to fix damage from lifting him. As you can imagine there is huge financial strain with me on and off work as well as all his medical costs.
We have recently purchased him a van we are fighting to have modified for him. We keep getting told we don’t have enough evidence. I’m not sure how much they need when the poor kid can’t even walk anymore.
We are still fighting for home renovations to be done to make showering and toileting a whole lot easier. And we are having to fork out around 10k to put ducted in our house as his body can not regulate the heat and he struggles.
At the moment we are hoping to raise as much as we can to do all the things he wishes to do as well as get these modifications done so his life can be a little easier. We are also looking at having another float built when we are able to, to have the float door made wider so he can get the wheelchair in and out when we go distances to save unloading horses to access it.
If you are able to donate big and small it’s all much appreciated. Even if you can only share his fundraiser around we are very grateful.
