Hi my name is Jo, I am Ethan's mum. This is Ethan's story:
Ethan was brought up on the IOM, lived life to the full and adored his little boy. He worked in Trust Management Services and was a kind and sensitive young man. He enjoyed travelling. festivals and had a passion for cars! However, on 8th September 2024 he suffered a significant hypoglycaemic brain injury at the age of 27. (Ethan was a Type 1 diabetic who was diagnosed at 14 years).
Ethan's' initial prognosis was poor and medics did not expect Ethan to survive his injury. As a family we were devastated to learn of this and remained with Ethan at Nobles Hospital from September - December 2024 hopeful that Ethan would defy all odds and show signs of recovery.
Ethan did show signs of "wakefulness" and thankfully we felt a life line presented when it was agreed that Ethan would transfer to Walton where they are trained to manage such medical emergencies.
On the eve of Christmas Eve Ethan was transferred by air ambulance to Sid Watkins Rehabilitation Centre, Walton in Liverpool. This was for an an assessment of his level of consciousness. He remained at the Centre from December 2024 - September 2025.
Following the assessment at Sid Watkins Ethan transferred to Derby House Neurological Care Home where he remains. Further assessments were completed of his level of consciousness and Ethan has now been diagnosed as Minimally Conscious negative.
During Ethan's time in the UK I have commuted weekly to be with him and continue to do so. With no support in the UK this has and continues to be a very difficult time for us as a family. It has left my husband on the Isle of Man to support our son (who during this time was studying his GCSE's) and a young family member also in our care. To be close to Ethan and to keep costs down I had no choice but to live from a camper during this time (and continue to do so).
We are now at the point where the UK assessments are concluded and services are looking at discharge planning. The Isle of Man does not have the specialist services Ethan requires and we know that it would be Ethan's wish, and in his best interest to return home and to support his recovery alongside his loved ones and his little boy.
To enable this to happen and for it to be safe for Ethan we need to make alterations to our home. This includes converting our garage into living accommodation for Ethan including having disabled access to our home so he feels inclusive in family life. As a result of his injury Ethan has lost the power of speech and mobility resulting in a high level of medical care need meaning he requires 24 hour care. Ethan requires medical/care support with every aspect of daily living from personal care to being fed through a feeding tube and having medications administered.
In conclusion. we are hoping that the community can support us in helping us bring Ethan back home where he belongs with his family and little boy. We would welcome any support big or small that would enable us to provide a safe environment for Ethan and significantly improve his quality of life.
Thank you for taking the time to read Ethan's story x x
