Briar Rose is a 5 year old english setter who came to me through rescue. She has always had bowel issues and I have had to take her to the vet and emergency room many times. I could tell yesterday she was sick and took her to the emergency room vet where she was tested and evaluated for 4 hours and transferred to Penn Vet in Philadelphia.
She had emergency surgery last night and between the tests, diagnostics, hospital stay and surgery, her bill is to come in between $10,000 and $12,000. She is in the intensive care unit of Penn today and recovering.
She was discovered that she has an extra 1/2 spleen (a spleen and a half) and extra bowel. Her organs are not in the areas they should be. Her colon was strangled in bowel and it showed a twist and blockage.
Hopefully, after this surgery, this will help alleviate any future problems. The surgeon tacked her colon to her abdominal wall, and the extra length of bowel, tacked to another wall to keep everything into place. This will eliminate any twisting and strangling of the bowel.
Never in a million years did I expect this surgery to come in at this amount of money, nor add up so quickly in one day. We will still have expense as she will be in the hospital another 2 to 3 days on meds, antibiotics, trying to get her to eat, and being evaluated.
She is a wonderful girl and dearly loved. We would never have thought of putting her down due to expense but we are asking for help as this is over the top expensive. Thank you so much!
