Aloha, my name is Doug Okamura. My youngest sister, Brenda Okamura, has been battling Leukemia cancer since 2018, which is now terminal and life-threatening. She’s been in so much aggravating pain as the cancer is already in stage 4 and spread throughout her body.

Brenda is currently 31 years old, and a mother of two very young children: a 5-year-old daughter and 2-year-old daughter. It’s been very painful and difficult to see Brenda suffering through this all. As a young mother, we all know Brenda still has so much to live for. It’s been a very long strenuous and painful battle.

On October 3, 2022, Brenda flew up to Seattle on her doctor’s recommendation for two specialized cancer treatments at the University of Washington Medical Center Montlake that was otherwise not available anywhere in Hawaii.

Unfortunately, Brenda's body rejected both specialized procedures causing both treatments to fail. At this point, the Seattle team of Oncologists and Specialists have stated they have done everything possible for Brenda, and that nothing more can be done except to keep her comfortable. No further treatments are available, and my sister unfortunately does not qualify for a bone marrow transplant.

Brenda is still in Seattle to this day and longs to return home back to Hawaii. We are posting this GoFundMe request for the very first time in need of financial assistance to help Brenda return home to Hawaii via a specialized medical air transportation system. Since the beginning of her Leukemia development, Brenda has incurred an overwhelming amount of medical debt. In addition, Brenda is unable to travel back to Hawaii (from Seattle) on a standard commercial airline flight.

The specialized medical air ambulance transportation system will include a specialized team of medical assistants on board the specialized medical aircraft. This is an out-of-pocket cost that will be in the $70k to $100k range. Insurance will not cover this unfortunately.

Some people who have terminal illnesses may have a wide variety of wishes such as wanting to meet a celebrity or sports professional, or being able to experience one of their life's bucket list of activities. For my sister Brenda, her wish is simple: to return home to Hawaii to spend the precious remaining God-given time she may have left with us here in this life.
