Hi! I'm Kristin- Paul & Barb's daughter. About 10 years ago my mom was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. In 2014, she had a procedure done where the Dr implanted a DBS unit. It has made a huge difference in her quality of life with this horrible disease. My dad has been her main care taker this whole time. He took care of giving her medication, making sure she went to Dr appointments and being there when she needed help. I was going down and helping her with showers and we would help out when we could or when we needed to.
On December 3, 2021, my mom had a procedure to replace the battery in her DBS unit. About a week post-op we noticed some changes in her behavior and speech.
On December 16, 2021 my mom was taken to the hospital via ambulance. She was severely dehydrated, very confused, having a difficult time walking and talking. After a few hours in the hospital ER she was admitted. She stayed in the hospital until December 31, 2021. On NYE she was transferred to a skilled care facility. The Physical Therapist, Speech Therapist and Occupational Therapist work with her 6 days a week. They are trying to get her strength built back up so she can hopefully come back home. We are hoping as she continues her therapy she will be able to regain her speech as well. Her Parkinson's seems to have progressed more also.
Insurance will only pay for her first 20 days in skilled care. From day 21-41 about 80% of her daily cost will fall upon my parents shoulders. Then insurance will cover from day 42-100 again. I don't feel this is a very fair system. My parents have worked their whole lives and don't need the added expense or need to worry about paying the hospital and skilled care bills with what little savings they do have. I am hoping to lessen the financial burden for them through fundraising. My entire family is helping out by taking turns visiting my mom. My dad recently went on Oxygen full time due to his COPD. If and when we do get to bring her home, I think my dad will need more help with some sort of InHome Healthcare.
My parents have always been willing to lend a helping hand to anyone. I feel it's their turn to receive!
If you are able to give, even a little, God Bless you! If you can't give financially but would be willing to offer up some prayers, God Bless you! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! We are hoping to be able to bring my Mom home again.
Please feel free to send a card also!
