On Christmas morning, December 25, this curious, spunky little girl unknowingly ate something she shouldn’t have. We thought it was her new rubber toy, and quickly cleaned it up and took it away from her. Later that night while visiting family, my daughter checked the cameras and saw that Nala had gotten quite sick all over the couch and floor. Alyssa and Michael quickly rushed home to check on her and clean up. Through Christmas night, Nala grew sicker, continuing to vomit and had diarrhea. She wanted no part of food or water. First thing in the morning they took her to her vet where she was referred to the 24 hr EMERGENCY vet to have an X-ray because her veterinarian thought she had a blockage. The 24 hr vet did NOT do an x-ray, did an u/s (or so we were told) gave her fluids, anti nausea meds and sent her home. They were told that if she continued vomiting to call back because that meant something was still wrong. Wednesday comes and at the 24 hr mark when the anti nausea meds wore off, Nala immediately threw up. My daughter called the ER vet and was told they were going to call in more nausea meds. We never got a call back. Now we are at Thursday morning. This poor baby has not eaten, still has diarrhea and vomited AGAIN! Back to the emergency vet she goes. We sat there for 4 hours begging for someone to check her, only to be told they had bigger emergencies and that she was resting (in other words SEDATED). No one had even checked her. SIX hours later a doctor finally sees her and says I think she just needs to let this run its course, her Gi Tract is “probably” inflamed so we can give her some meds and you can take her home. THANK GOD for NALA’s fighting spirit because as the doctor walked out she vomited AGAIN! I immediately got on the phone with her ACTUAL doctor and begged her to call the ER because we KNEW there had to be something wrong for this to still be going on and our doctor agreed there has to be a blockage. The ER vet argued and did not want to do an xray or repeat u/s. We PUSHED! They agreed to keep her overnight and repeat the ultrasound. We are now at Friday afternoon! We get a call that Nala has A BLOCKAGE!! 4 DAYS LATER!! This puppy suffered for 4 DAYS for no reason and racked up a $2200 hospital stay BEFORE they even knew she needed surgery because an incompetent doctor MISSED the blockage. This sweet baby is a fighter. The hospital bill is totaled at almost $10,000. They had to make a choice to put an otherwise healthy 5 month old puppy down, or somehow try to come up with funds to save her life. These two young kids are living on their own and struggling to try to make ends meet, but are doing everything they can to save their sweet girl. We know it is a hard time of year, but if anyone can spare anything to help offset the cost of NALA’s surgery, we all would be eternally grateful.
