Freya was born on November 10th, 2016. Lindsay had a perfectly healthy pregnancy, labor and delivery. After two days in the hospital, both Lindsay and Freya received clean bills of health and were discharged to go home.
Freya seemed like a healthy and happy baby, however she wasn't gaining weight as quickly as her pediatrician would have liked. The only explanation the pediatrician gave Lindsay was that her breast milk wasn't calorically dense enough. Lindsay ate all the nutrient dense foods to try and thicken her breast milk, but Freya still was gaining weight extremely slowly. Freya was visiting her pediatrician every 2 weeks for weight checks, and after 9 weeks she had only gained 1 pound.
Suspecting there may be something else going on with her daughter, Lindsay visited a different pediatrician early last week for a second opinion. Immediately after listening to her heart, this pediatrician informed Lindsay that he didn't like the sound of Freya's heart, and that her heart rate was extremely elevated. Freya then went for an Echocardiogram and Lindsay waited for the results. Early the next morning, the doctor called Lindsay and told her to take Freya to the ER immediately. From the ER, Freya was flown to CHOP in Philly.
Lindsay, a single mom, rushed quickly to be by Freya's side. The next morning, Freya endured a 6 hour open heart surgery. The doctors suspected that Freya was suffering from a condition called ALCAPA, a rare condition which affects the arteries in the heart. But they discovered that Freya is suffering from a combination of two conditions, ALPACA and coronary Ostial atresial. This is so rare that the doctors don't even have a name for Freya's condition. They've never seen a patient with the combination of these two conditions before.
Currently, Baby Freya is hooked up to an ECMO machine, and her heart isn't beating on its own yet. The doctors aren't sure if she will need another surgery or not. The money that is raised will go toward medical bills that will undoubtedly start to pile up. It will also go to Lindsay's travel expenses with going back and forth to Philly, and her living expenses as well. She was supposed to go back to work in a couple weeks but she now doesn't know when she will be able to return. She needs all the help she can get as a single mom who is providing for Freya independently. Please find it in your heart to help Lindsay and Baby Freya.
