Please Help April with Emergency Medical Costs!

Soooo… April blew herself up… For reals… And without my help…

On Thursday, January 14th, April was sanitizing her home with some 91% alcohol and spilled a little (?) on herself. After a few moments (and after she thought it had all evaporated) she struck her lighter to burn some incense.

The simple downward flick of her thumb detonated the small fuel/air bomb she had unknowingly concocted, which in turn, caught her pants on fire.

Thankfully her friend Steven was there and had the presence of mind to get her into the shower, call 9-1-1, and put out a small fire which had started due to her shenanigans (THANK YOU STEVEN! This literally saved her life!!!)

She was transported by ambulance to Denver Health and then to University Hospital where she is currently lounging in the ICU Burn Unit. She has deep 3rd degree burns on 20% of her body with most of them on the back and inside of her thighs and on her left forearm. She will be having a number of surgeries to remove damaged tissue and to place skin grafts and will be in the hospital for up to 3 MONTHS!

She is in stable condition but in a great deal of pain, even with all of the super-painkillers. From what I understand, burns, especially ones this deep and severe, are almost constantly unbearable even when the patient is heavily sedated. She is trying very hard to keep a sense of humor and even mumbles little jokes like, “My biscuits are burnin’! My biscuits are burnin’!” (She loved Bugs Bunny cartoons as a kid) and “Liar, Liar, Pants on fire!”

I pray the subdued dark humor doesn’t detract from the seriousness of her situation, but I know April would appreciate the levity a lot. She is an optimistic, brilliant and humorous angel that lights up every room she enters. She would want people to laugh at the pure irony of it all. She’s so safety minded, organized and… well… Not prone to things like blowing herself up… And for those of you who know the Crowell family’s story, you know that laughing at things out of our control is our most favoritest coping mechanism in this wonderful little roller coaster (you know the one – the rickety one without brakes or any other safety measures) we cherish and call life…
