What started as a lesion in her tibia has slowly taken over her entire tibia leg bone—from knee to ankle.
After years of monitoring, her bone broke back in March, leaving her immobile, in a wheelchair, and out of school since.
Her leg could not heal on its own, and without surgical intervention to remove the tumor, it could progress to something worse. She cannot have a rod placed in her leg as it is not an option medically. After a month of searching and doctor's appointments, they have finally found the best course of action.
On May 16th, Isla under went her first major surgery, where doctors removed the entire affected bone 11.5 inches, just below her knee to just above her ankle, and place a temporary spacer. She’ll spend a week in the hospital recovering before returning home for a short period.
Shortly after, the family will traveled to West Palm Beach for a groundbreaking second surgery with a specialist who has developed a new type of bone transport procedure. This will be the longest bone growth distance ever done and involves attaching external braces and internal cables to stretch and fuse the remaining healthy bone segments together over the course of 10-12 months. It’s our best hope to save Isla’s leg—and her future mobility.
This journey comes with tremendous emotional, physical, and financial burdens. Between surgeries, hospital stays, travel, housing, time off work, and long-term care, the family is facing an overwhelming amount of stress while also trying to keep life normal for the other 5 kids in the house. (Isla is #4 of 7 kids, from 3 years to 21 years.)
Every donation—no matter the size—will go to help support the family during this incredibly difficult time so they can supplement the daily expenses as they focus on her and the family.
If you can’t donate, please consider sharing Isla’s story and lifting her up in your prayers.
