In August of 1996, I was 16 and charged with murder. Under advice of council, I plead guilty to one murder and was subsequently convicted by trial of two additional murders. By 1998, I was convicted and sentenced to serve consecutive life and 70 years to life for the two convictions.
As a young and impressionable boy, I was foolish and naïve to a lot of things. I chose to spend time with the older (in their 20s) men in my neighborhood. This initial decision snowballed into a mountain of unfortunate and life altering events in mine and other’s lives. Although, I never fired a weapon or incited violence, I was on the scene when the two events in question occurred.
Even at my young age, perhaps I could have done or said something to stop these events. Maybe I could have saved the lives of the young men that were murdered. They were victims of senseless violence only because of where they lived. I can’t express my sorrow in full, but I can only hope that when I return to society I can help the younger generation learn from the mistakes I've made and teach them to lead lives surrounded by good and positive influence.
I grew up in prison but I am proud of the man I have become. I have done many good things during the 25 years I have been incarcerated and am only looking forward to continue to show my gratitude for freedom. God willing, I'll be coming out of prison soon equipped with my diploma, college course credits, and extensive work experience in serving others.
I recently shared my story with Nathans & Biddle LLP, a law firm who has agreed to take me on as a client, noting that juvenile offenders should have a second chance at free life. They have put together a preliminary review of my case and they believe they can help me get my freedom back. In order to continue services with them, I am facing a bill of $20k to include litigation and consultation costs. Hopefully with an understanding of my story, and an eagerness to help a changed (now man) start a new, free life, I humbly ask for your help and assistance in accomplishing this goal. Thank you for your support!
