Please Help 3 Extraordinary Nurses

Hello. My name is Laura, and I’m a Registered Nurse, Patient Care Coordinator at a major medical center in the Bronx, NY.  At this time, I’m sad to say that three of my coworkers, also nurses, have each been diagnosed with cancer within the past three months and have had to take medical leave from work to address this terrible disease and sustain their ongoing medical treatments.

I have had the pleasure of knowing and working with Theresa, Siobhan and Helen in a cardiac unit for the past ten years, and have watched them work tirelessly throughout the COVID pandemic crises at the expense of their own personal lives.  It has been indeed a challenging time for them, but they have faced every obstacle with great courage and sacrifice and I would truly consider them “healthcare heroes.”

These three women have the purest, kindest hearts and are the ones you turn to in time of need.  Helen is the “den mother” of our unit.  She gets coffee and lays out snacks before every shift and makes certain that we start our day with a positive attitude.  Siobhan is the person you speak to for advice.  She gets great satisfaction in helping you solve a problem, and she will walk you through it and discuss the best possible options at your disposal.  And finally, Theresa is the “sensitive soul,” the compassionate one, who will give you a big hug when you need it and comfort you and tell you everything will be alright.

These women are currently responsible for seven children between them, and rely on their paychecks each week to pay for their mortgages, groceries, and now medical bills.  But as their surgery and chemotherapy treatment bills continue to increase each week, it is becoming more and more difficult for these women to address their individual treatments without stress and worry as to how to pay for them.
