Please give Nai a chance to fight for his life

Hi, my name is Vansi Rayane from France and I need your help for my dear friend Nai who is actually in a hospital in Thailand.

Soe Min Oo (nicknamed Nai) is a respectful and gentle 24-year-old. He was working in a hotel in Bangkok when I met him 3 years ago. He was a wonderful and hard-working young man, with the dream to visit again his free country Myanmar someday and to open a restaurant.

He got covid last year and since September 2022, he mentioned he was coughing and had issues with his lungs. After seeing several doctors, he was told that these were just the long-term effects of covid. In January, his lung infection got worse, and he got diagnosed with HIV. Unfortunately, it was too late, and his immune system was already very low.

In February, he had to go back to his parents home in Nakhon Pathom as he started to lose consciousness and memories. After one week in Nakhon Pathom hospital where he went through different examinations and was treated for various infections in his body, Nai was sent home because his parents (who are poor farmers) couldn’t afford to pay more for the hospital fees. Nai and his family are Burmese, so they don’t have healthcare or medical insurance in Thailand, and they must pay all medical fees from their pocket.

I live and work in Paris but managed to get time off work and flew to Thailand in March. Nai was already very weak and lost a lot of weight. He has already lost autonomy in walking, eating, talking. Indeed, his condition required immediate hospitalisation. We then decided, with his family agreement, to bring him back to Nakhon Pathom hospital, where he could get proper care, and I covered for all of his hospital expenses till today.

He is in the hospital since mid-March. The doctors diagnosed an infection in his left brain. After different blood tests, MRI, CT scans and spinal fluid extraction, they couldn’t yet find the exact type of infection in his brain. Last week, he got brain inflammation and swelling (Encephalitis ) and needed to be put on life support to breath properly. His CD4 count is only 10. Nai is now under treatment with antibiotics against all type of infections (viral, bacterial, fungal) and we are waiting for the results. It is going to be a long journey of recovery as his brain infection is very serious.

I know that his condition is serious, but as long as Nai has a chance to survive, I cannot give up on him. He was such a kind person for others around him. He deserves all our efforts and sacrifice. How can I also give up on his family, especially his mum? She is such a great mum sacrificing her own life to take care of her son every day in the ward, feeding and cleaning him. Unfortunately, it is also a question of money to try to save a human life. I already spent a lot of money for the hospital and supporting his mum who has to be permanently on his side in the ward. I am ready to support Nai as long as he needs, but my finance is limited as well. His condition requires a long-term treatment and it will be a long fight with a lot of difficulties ahead. But I keep hope in the miracle of life and in humanity. That’s why I would like to ask for your generosity and help, friends, family, relatives, strangers with good heart… With your help, Nai would be able to pay for his hospital expenses and support his mum in the coming months.

When I said good bye for the last time before I had to fly back to France in early April, even though Nai couldn’t talk or move, I could see in his eyes his sadness and I knew that he was still in there somewhere looking at me… I just can’t let him down. I love him so much. He needs me. He needs all of us.

Nai family and I would be very grateful for anything you felt able to contribute, however small, or if you could share Nai’s story to people who may be able to help, so that Nai could afford the healthcare he needs and have a chance to fight for his life.
With all our love and gratitude,

Vansi and Nai’s family

Bonjour a tous,
