Jana’s Story

Jana Harms is going through quite a crisis right now. She has missed a lot of work lately due to having a knee replacement and then the second knee replacement on the other knee just a few weeks ago. She has missed payments on her house so she has been forced to sell it or let it go to foreclosure. We are thankful the house is sold and near to closing. She moved in to a small rental home here in Montezuma but started having trouble with her latest knee replacement. To make a long story short she developed an infection in that new joint so on August 31 she had another surgery to remove that hardware to facilitate healing from the infection. Now she faces life with no weight bearing on that leg, no more than 20 degrees of flex in the joint and daily IV antibiotics for eight weeks.

She requires nearly constant care with mobility problems and daily routine living. Her current housing situation will not accommodate her needs during this healing and recovery process. We aren’t sure of the immediate future plans at this time but it appears that she will be moving to an in-patient intensive rehabilitation situation or a nursing care facility. At any rate it appears that she will be subject to some kind of residential health care for a couple of months. After the course of antibiotics they will go in and replace the knee hardware again and she can begin her convalescence.

This all means that she will likely be off of work for three months or longer with no other source of income. Her insurance covers her hospitalization but will not cover long term care. We are reaching out for help for Jana to pay the bills as she obviously has very limited resources of her own at this time.
