Hi family and friends.

Our dear nanny, Maricruz, was awakened by a phone call this past Tuesday morning that for most of us, would be our worst nightmare. She was informed that her husband, David and daughter, Erika, were involved in a horrific car accident, which left them both gravely injured. They were admitted to UCSD Hillcrest Hospital where they have been undergoing many surgeries and life saving measures. Erika suffered a broken pelvis and arm, and post-operatively remains in excruciating pain. David’s injuries were much more severe and he remains in guarded condition. His injuries include (but are certainly not limited to) two broken legs, a shattered pelvis, a broken left arm, sternum, and fractures of nearly every rib. Perhaps most devastating of all is that he also severed his spinal cord resulting in paralysis. Currently the medical team is saying he will not walk again. He is in an induced coma, ventilated, with many internal organ injuries as well. At this point in time, there is no clear answer as to what the outcome of all of his injuries will be. We do know that his life and the lives of their family were forever changed at the moment that this tragic accident occurred.

The financial burden that this accident has already placed on Mari and her family is unimaginable and medical expenses will continue to pile up as David and Erika’s hospitalizations continue. Both will also need extensive rehabilitation down the road. The last thing that we want Mari to have to worry about at this time is money. Please, please consider donating whatever you can to help carry Mari and her family through this absolutely devastating time.

Mari has become like family to us and has always cared for our boys as if they were her own. And we are only one of many families that she has impacted in this way. Let’s rally together as a community and reciprocate the love and care that she has shown so many of us.

Este pasado martes nuestra querida niñera, Maricruz, fue despertada por una llamada telefónica que para la mayoría de nosotros sería nuestra peor pesadilla. Le informaron de que su marido, David, y su hija, Erika, habían sufrido un terrible accidente de coche, en el que ambos resultaron gravemente heridos. Fueron ingresadas en el hospital Hillcrest de la UCSD, donde han sido sometidas a numerosas operaciones y medidas para salvar sus vidas. Erika sufrió una fractura de pelvis y de brazo, y tras la operación sigue sufriendo un dolor insoportable. Las lesiones de David fueron mucho más graves y sigue en condición crítica. Sus lesiones incluyen (pero no se limitan a) dos piernas rotas, una pelvis destrozada, un brazo izquierdo roto, el esternón y fracturas de casi todas las costillas. Quizás lo más devastador de todo es que también dañó la médula espinal, lo que le provocó una parálisis. Actualmente el equipo médico dice que no volverá a caminar. Está en coma inducido, ventilado y con muchas lesiones en los órganos internos. En este momento, no hay una respuesta clara sobre cuál será el resultado de todas sus lesiones. Lo que sí sabemos es que su vida y la de su familia cambió para siempre en el momento en que ocurrió este trágico accidente.

La carga financiera que este accidente ha supuesto para Mari y su familia es inimaginable y los gastos médicos seguirán acumulándose a medida que continúen las hospitalizaciones de David y Erika. Ambos necesitarán también una amplia rehabilitación en el futuro. Lo último de lo que queremos que Mari tenga que preocuparse en estos momentos es del dinero. Por favor, considere la posibilidad de donar lo que pueda para ayudar a Mari y a su familia en este momento absolutamente devastador.

Mari es como parte de nuestra familia y siempre ha cuidado de nuestros hijos como si fueran suyos. Y sólo somos una de las muchas familias a las que ha influido de esta manera. Unámonos como comunidad y retribuyamos el amor y el cuidado que ella ha mostrado a muchos de nosotros.
