My momma Dawn Marie Plank has always been a very dedicated hard worker. Anyone who has the privilege of knowing her would tell you that. After 16 combined years housekeeping and then doing front desk at the hotel for 3 more She was finally promoted to the general manager of Nichols inn in Red Wing and she was so proud. Momma took great pride in her work. Anyways at the end of 2020 In spite of debilitating back pain she was still working every day. After months of intense pain my mom eventually went into the doctor at the end of December. They suggested a chiropractor. Mom tried that and it made the pain worse. On January 6th mom was seen at the clinic in Lake City and they seen the spots on her liver. The next day we found out that it was stage 4. It initially started in her lungs and then metastasized to her spine brain and liver. This is the very same type of cancer that took her dad and her grandfather away from us all far too early. Shes the 3rd generation with this diagnosis but her story is so far from being finished yet! Momma fearlessly started chemo right away. They initially scheduled 3 rounds of 3 days of agressive chemo with a 21 day a break in between each round. At the end of that we scanned everything and everything was shrinking! Miraculously enough the one in her brain was completely gone! They then decided to add 1 more round of the more aggressive chemo and then after that we switched to a much less intense maintenance chemo with plans to rescann in 3 weeks. Immediately after the maintenance Chemo was started my mother started suffering from intense headaches. We followed up with her palliative care team and we were told to up the pain meds. The headaches continued. Mayo asked her to come back. After testing all day yesterday we received the dreaded news that not only has it come back in her brain but that there were too many spots to get an accurate count. Its also started to spread on her lower spine. The plan is now to add a pinpoint type of radiation to both of these places starting Monday. She will do this every weekday for 2 weeks. It will be intense and difficult to say the least. My dad has been at her side the entire step of the way and mom had to quit her job the day she got her diagnosis so literally there is no money right now other then my dads social security which doesn't stretch far at all. My mom was approved for disability but that will not start until July. They told her that she had to be without income for 6 months before she could get a check. She will qualify for back pay but she won't get that until July and the way the bills are right now that's going to eat it up right away. The hospital is currently trying to tell my mom that she owes them $97,000, and she only started treatment in January. Thats 22k a month. It should be noted that my mom had insurance at the time of her diagnosis. You would think that everything would be covered but it's not. No one ever tells you how expensive cancer is. My mom spends the better part of her day arguing with people on the phone about insurance. Very shortly after my mom was diagnosed she had to make the agonizing decision to put her beloved dog Charley down because she could not afford to choose between her own expensive pain medication or the dog's expensive medication. Were it not for that my mom would still have her dog at her side as a comfort during this all.
As a family its not easy for us to ask for much, but at this point as her daughter I need to at least try to alleviate some of the financial burden that has been laid upon my mother and father.
Time is promised to no one and we are trying to spend as much time as we can soaking up everything.
Anything helps at this point and if you can't give financially, please please PLEASE pray! Send good vibes, send a card, something, anything really to show her the size of the Army of people she has by her side.
As her daughter, thank you so much for reading and from the bottom of my heart I appreciate your generosity at this difficult time.
