In Memory of Dave Rushworth (Rushy) – Supporting Air Ambulance & Mountain Rescue

Dave Rushworth, or "Rushy" to most of us, was a great man. He loved his family and always looked out for his friends. He was funny, kind, and someone you could always count on. When I joined the prison service, he was a true role model to me — always having a laugh, helping others, and doing his job with real care and skill.

On the 12th of November 2022, Dave was on a weekend trip in the Lake District with his mates. While at the top of Whinrigg mountain, he collapsed and became unconscious. We gave him CPR for nearly an hour, but when the air ambulance arrived, they told us Dave had already passed away.

Because he was already gone, the air ambulance couldn’t take him, they had to be ready in case someone else needed saving. So, we waited on the mountain until members of the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team arrived. They were amazing. They helped carry Dave back down the mountain and supported all of us while we were still in shock.

We’ll never forget the effort and care shown by both the air ambulance and the mountain rescue teams that day.

To honour Dave’s memory, Jim Bousfield and I will be running the Chester Marathon on the 5th of October. We're raising money for the Air Ambulance and Wasdale Mountain Rescue — two amazing services that helped us when we needed them most.

Dave would have turned 60 years old today, on the 6th of May. To mark his 60th birthday, we’re starting this fundraiser in his name. We’re asking all who knew and loved Rushy to make a donation, big or small, to help these life-saving teams.

The fundraiser will stay open until 12th November 2025, which will be three years since Dave passed away.
