Please Assist the Michael O'Bryan Family

November 18, 2019 started like any normal day, but it turned out to be anything but normal. Michael O’Bryan and his daughter Sara were moving a metal cabinet to the basement of their family home in Cincinnati, Ohio. Even though they were wearing moving gloves, the cabinet slipped and pinned Michael beneath it, causing a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the chest down. Life was suddenly tenuous, fragile, and uncertain.
Michael was life-flighted to the University of Cincinnati hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc between the C3 and C4 vertebrae. Now the long process of healing begins. Once Michael’s condition was stable and the feeding tube was removed, he was transferred to the Ohio State Dodd Rehabilitation Hospital in Columbus where he began a month of intensive therapy.
His wife Andrea continued to work as an inside sales representative during the week in Cincinnati (she carries the family’s health care insurance) while also caring for their special needs teen son; she then spent the weekend with Michael in Columbus. While Michael has had some improvement in mobility and sensation, the progress is slow.
Michael is now home and Andrea has taken one month of unpaid medical leave to get him settled and to figure out their new “normal.” As you can imagine, the medical care Michael needs is extensive and costly. Additionally, the family has had to purchase a motorized wheel chair and other equipment, as well as making some modifications to their home. They desperately need money to make up for the loss of Michael's income and mounting medical bills.
Their insurance does not cover the cost of home health care—something they will definitely need so that Andrea can continue to work. The O’Bryans realize they are facing a marathon recovery with no guarantee of what the future holds.
