Playing for GB World para hockey team in Norway
Donation protected
Hi My name is John Mellor .I became an above knee amputee following a motorcycle accident in 1980 when i was 17. This has never stopped me doing or achieving anything i set my mind to.
12 years ago i broke my back and after having it fused the sport i enjoyed, downhill skiing wasn't the same.
In 2015 i heard of a local sledge hockey team called the Cape Breton Sledgehammers and i went along to their practice to give it a go. I was hooked straight away and have been playing for them ever since, competing in tournaments across the maritime provinces every year.
I also help coach great group of kids who have joined the GBMH Sledge program and are the future of this great sport we all love.
Last year after watching the tournament in Kazakhstan i was encouraged by a team mate and friend to contact Team GB Coaches. I did and expressed my interest in getting involved with the national team program with a view of playing for Great Britain.
The coaches watched a tournament i played in late last year and invited me to the selection camps earlier this year in January and February.
This was a dream come true just to be at a selection camp with all the other great athletes competing for the place on the roster that would travel to Norway and represent Great Britain in the Group B World Championships in April.
Getting the call that told me that i had made the roster for the Great Britain team was the proudest day in my life.
Achieving this at my age is unbelievable and shows that with dedication and hard work and a great support team anyone can do anything they set their mind to regardless of obstacles in their path
This dream has only become a reality because of the support and encouragement i have had from Coaches, Team mates and Family and Friends.
None of this journey is covered by any funding and that is why i have set up this page to help get me to Norway in April and make my dream come true and represent Great Britain with all my Team mates.
Any donations large or small will be greatly appreciated and i thank anyone in advance who will help me on my journey.
