The pupils have spoken and we have listened
Overall, enjoyment of reading in schools is at a 15-year low in Scotland - although the pupils of Kirkcudbright Primary School are among some of the most enthusiastic readers around which is why they have requested a nice wee place to enjoy a good story in their down time! So we at Kirkcudbright Primary School Parent Council would like to help keep that enthusiasm going.
Together, we are aiming to have an outside reading area (a book nook) built and stocked for pupils to use during break times. In order to achieve this, we are engaging the interest of the wider community to seek contributions towards the building. As we appreciate not everyone is in a position to contribute, we’d like it known there is NO expectation to hand over a donation - we are also fundraising outwith the GoFundMe but see this as a way to reach a wider audience. This nook is for every pupil, regardless of parental donation!
The Scottish Government’s vision for literacy includes:
■ Breaking the link between poor literacy levels and deprivation
■ Improving the skills of the few who have difficulties with basic literacy, particularly those
who are vulnerable
■ Ensuring young people progress successfully from basic to advanced literacy skills
■ Raising advanced literacy skills for all
Let’s help them along!
