ANY AMOUNT IS APPRECIATED, AND WILL GO TOWARD PRODUCING AN ORIGINAL RECORD PRODUCED IN ATHENS ALONG WITH A DOCUMENTARY FILM PROFILING CANCER PATIENTS, CANCER RESEARCHERS AND, OF COURSE, THE MUSICIANS, THE "PLAYERS OF THE LYRE." $10 GETS YOU A ROLLING NAME CREDIT AT THE END OF THE FILM. CLICK THE PICTURE OF SHANNON TO SEE THE CAMPAIGN INFOMERCIAL. FURTHER INFO BELOW. THANK YOU!
"The Players of the Lyre" is a locally-based, Athens, GA - produced project coming from "The Classic City," of the South....the music city with a heart which birthed REM, The B-52s, Drive-by Truckers and Widespread Panic. Never before have 20 Athens-based artists come together for one cause. They were paired into teams of two to write a 10-song original record benefiting The American Cancer Society.
This project hit home with the producers of "The Players," as one of their own, best friend of Executive Producer, Misty Alfonso, Shannon Bridges Lay, was diagnosed with aggressive lymphoma. She has just finished her sixth round of chemotherapy. And while this project is dedicated to her, all profits* will go to The American Cancer Society for research for a cure and to investigate how music therapy is physiologically healing to the human body.
If you're a music lover, you don't have to be from Athens, GA to be part of the mission. Everyone today is "aware" of cancer. We've all grown up knowing about it....even raising funds for it. And yet, there is no cure. So how do we comfort those we love in the meantime? Science is consistently showing the benefits of music as a healing agent to the human brain, already wired to receive and enjoy it.
"The Players of the Lyre" is a compilation package on sale for $20. With it is a CD of 10 original songs written by 20 Athens-based local artists in collaborative teams of two. Each song is centered around cancer, the fight, the heartache, the victory. Along with the CD, the producers are currently filming a documentary DVD on the making of the CD by shadowing the artists in their collaborative efforts, getting to know them and why they're supporting The American Cancer Society with their time and talents. Another goal of the film is to get the stories of local cancer patients along with interviews with physicians in the field, local religious representatives and theologians on their thoughts about humanity and cancer, and even our local and national politicians to ask a simple question: "Where is the cure?"
By helping with any amount, you are contributing to the mission of this project. The main costs of producing it are things like studio recording time, CD/DVD duplication, graphic design, promotional and print media, T-shirts, rental space for the documentary screenings, and even gasoline and traveling expenses as we leave Athens to go get answers to our questions about what more we can do to help people and their families plagued with and hurt by this dreadful disease.
We need your help as soon as possible. Artists are already getting into the studio to record their original music. The Leaphart Rally for a Cure to US Congress will take place this July, and the producers would like to get this on film. There are many expenses which go into a project like this most don't think about. Post production editing, replacing blown balloon lighting, SD cards, gasoline after miles and miles of travel to get footage.....all of which seem trite and minimal until you see them through the prism of what we need to capture the real stories behind the faces of those with cancer who've agreed to be part of this project, along with interviews with 20 Athens-based musicians, while also capturing as much of their current performance footage for you as possible. And they travel all over.
This means a lot to the Executive Producers of the project. We see our friend, Shannon, and her family struggling to navigate the rough waters of cancer and its treatment. She is one of many, many stories. We will bring you a few, from different races, religions, and bank account balances. Each story is so important.
But if you're a music lover, you're going to get a real treat, too! Ten never-heard-before eclectic, funky songs from some of the best talent The South offers up.
Thank you so much for your consideration in partnering with us to create this project. A project not only meant to ask questions, to be informative, to investigate the current state of cancer research and to profile some Georgians currently fighting the good fight, but also to re-introduce TODAY'S Athens local music scene whose heritage harkens back to the days of The B-52s and REM. The talent is still birthed here.
COME ON ATHENS!! AND ALL OF OUR NEIGHBORS. IT'S TIME. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
