On Sunday May 19, 2019 we will be holding the 11th annual Joyce Benek Memorial Golf Outing. This year the beneficiary will be Rob Szakelyhidi.
Rob is a lifelong member of the local community. He currently resides in Harmony, PA with his wife Lisa and their dog Brutus.
In 2009 Rob was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). After considerable research, Rob was able to avoid chemotherapy and conventional treatment by successfully following the Gerson Therapy. He made amazing progress, and his disease was in remission. Unfortunately, in 2016 Rob contracted Lyme Disease which seriously compromised his immune system. While fighting Lyme Disease, he was unable to continue the Gerson Therapy as the two protocols were incompatible. As treatment for Lyme continued, Rob's spleen became enlarged to the point that it interfered so drastically with his digestive system that he required hospitalization. There his white count rapidly increased and doctors decided to use a round of chemotherapy to try to slow the progression of the disease. He has been in and out of West Penn Hospital since the chemo treatment. Although the spleen size was reduced, Rob developed blood clots and currently has double pneumonia.
Rob has been unable to work for some time, his wife has had to take a leave from work and acts as his caregiver. They are in financial need and face a long road ahead.
CLL accounts for about one-third of all cases of leukemia, and there are about 15,000 people diagnosed with it each year in the United States. Please help us as we support Rob in fighting this disease that claims the lives of so many.
