Planting the Seeds of My Teaching Journey

My name is Kathrin Hernandez, and I’m a Baylor University student working toward my dream of becoming a certified teacher. Teaching has always been more than a career goal for me — it’s a calling. Whether I’m mentoring younger students, leading service projects, or helping shape student life on campus, I’ve always been drawn to supporting others and creating positive learning environments.

This summer, I need to take a required course that is essential for staying on track in my degree plan. The summer class is American Sign Language (ASL) II, and I will be taking it at Austin Community College. This is the only class available online in Texas during the summer, and the class costs $1,194. Because summer tuition is not fully covered by financial aid, I’m reaching out for help to make this class possible. Your support would directly impact my ability to continue progressing toward becoming the educator I’ve worked so hard to become.

Growing up in a low‑income household shaped my determination more than anything else. Resources were limited, but my drive to learn and succeed never was. I worked hard in school, took every opportunity available to me, and pushed myself toward college through dedication, leadership, and community involvement.

One of the most meaningful parts of my college experience has been serving on the Student Advisory Council (SAC). In this role, I help represent student perspectives, collaborate with campus leaders, and advocate for improvements that strengthen the student experience. This work has taught me how to listen, communicate, and lead — skills I know will make me a stronger teacher.

I am also a member of Alpha Delta Pi, where I’ve found a strong community rooted in sisterhood, service, and personal growth. Through this organization, I’m going to have the opportunity to connect with others who are passionate about giving back, while also developing leadership, teamwork, and communication skills. Being part of Alpha Delta Pi has helped shape me into a more confident and compassionate individual — qualities I know are essential in becoming an effective educator.

I also serve on the First‑Year Committee for the LEAD Living‑Learning Community in Dawson Hall, where I help build community, support new students, and plan programs that help first‑years feel welcomed and empowered. Being part of LEAD has shown me how important mentorship and belonging are in education, and it has deepened my commitment to creating supportive spaces for students.

Any contribution — big or small — brings me closer to the classroom where I hope to inspire future students the same way so many teachers inspired me.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for supporting my journey. Your generosity truly makes a difference.
