We're Lisbon Saplings. Started by students at St Julians In Carcavelos.

Lisboa has 16.8% tree cover. The European average is 30%. You feel that difference when you're walking home at four in the afternoon.

Walk down most streets in August and there is nowhere to stand. The pavement stays hot long after dark. There are tree pits along them, squares of bare soil that someone cut years ago meaning to plant something. They are still empty.

So we're planting 400 trees across Lisbon.

Why we need the money now:

Saplings can only go in the ground between October and February. That's when the roots settle before the heat comes. We have to buy the trees, get the permits and line up the tools before that window opens.

Planting days are open to everyone. Bring gloves and we'll bring the rest. We'll post the dates here once the permits come through.

Somos os Lisbon Saplings. Somos alunos do St Julian's em Carcavelos e começámos isto porque nos cansámos de esperar que outra pessoa o fizesse.

Andem pelas ruas em agosto e não há onde parar. O chão fica quente até muito depois de escurecer. Há caldeiras ao longo das ruas, quadrados de terra que alguém abriu há anos com a ideia de plantar algo. Continuam vazias.

Lisboa tem 16,8% de cobertura arbórea. A média europeia é de 30%. Nota-se essa diferença quando se vai para casa às quatro da tarde.

Por isso vamos plantar 400 árvores por Lisboa.

Porque precisamos do dinheiro agora:

As árvores jovens só podem ser plantadas entre outubro e fevereiro. É quando as raízes se instalam antes do calor chegar. Temos de comprar as árvores, tratar das licenças e reunir as ferramentas antes dessa janela abrir.
