Planning & Architecture for Black Lives

Donation protected
Over the last few months, the world saw how COVID19 & police violence disproportionately affect the Black community. Now more than ever, Planning + Architecture professionals must recognize their role in maintaining the systemic racism rampant in the cities we plan & build.

This Thu, June 18th, MUSE is hosting a virtual panel, Planning While Black in a Crisis, gathering Black professionals from Chicago, LA, Detroit, & Philadelphia to share how they're navigating today's pandemic and civil & economic unrest. To give back, MUSE is raising funds for organizations in the panelists' home cities to help end injustices in the communities they serve,

Now is the time to put your money where your values are. Thus, MUSE is challenging all our peers in the Planning, Architecture, and related field to show solidarity and for peer organizations to match donations to this funding pool. MUSE will match the first $500 donated and is challenging other Planning/Architecture firms to contribute matches of $500 or greater. April Hughes, AIA, owner and managing Principal of HPZS, has already committed - who'll be next!?

The following four organizations will split the funds raised:

• Chicago: Brave Space Alliance  in Hyde Park is a Black and trans-led LGBTQ+ center dedicated to providing resources and programming to queer people on the South and West Sides. The group is also pushing for queer and trans inclusivity in the movement for Black lives.

• Detroit: FORCE Detroit (Faithfully Organizing Resources for Community Empowerment) is a culmination of interfaith, grassroots and public sector leaders committed to having hard conversations about complex community issues, pushing boundaries and generating creative justice oriented solutions. They leverage media and culturally relevant strategies to connect people least likely to be engaged to civic infrastructures.

• Philadelphia: Beech Companies  is a long-standing Black-owned CDFI in North Philly. The original mission of Beech was that of a grant-making foundation to support community services. Their foundation arm has been giving out $1,000 microgrants to small businesses and nonprofits hit by the COVID-19 crisis.

• Los Angeles: Destination Crenshaw is an unprecedented community-led project that will celebrate the 200+ year history of Black activism in L.A. Through education, arts and culture, Destination Crenshaw will cement itself as a cultural hub that will facilitate economic security and entrepreneurship for residents as a method of place-keeping and community building.
