The captivating sparkle that once encapsulated her stunning green eyes, now gone; indistinct anguish and sorrow in its place.
Imagine watching your hero, the person you always thought was invincible, dissipate into something unrecognizable. This is the cruel reality of watching your beloved parent suffer from multiple chronic illnesses, each taking its toll in a variety of debilitating ways.
My mother was a fierce, independent single mother who tirelessly worked to support her children. She always worked 2-3 jobs to provide for us, ensuring we were not raised on social welfare or government handouts. Now she is unable to afford the basic necessities.
Although she does get social security, her payments are being garnished leaving her with barely enough to survive.
She suffers from kidney disease, heart disease, ulcerative colitis, diabetes, chronic pain, and has no thyroid. The physical impact these vicious diseases have taken on her body are nothing compared to the mental and emotional havoc they have wreaked. She has become severely depressed with paralyzing anxiety, not knowing what the future holds for her.
All of these things culminated in her being hospitalized last November with pneumonia, sepsis, and C. Diff; we nearly lost her.
She now takes upwards of 14 different medications each day, and they aren’t cheap. She has found herself having to choose between buying food and her life saving meds, or paying for rent. It’s nearly an impossible choice.
I realize many are struggling financially these days, so a donation isn’t always feasible. If this is the case, I simply ask that you pray for my mom. Give her a call to see how she’s doing. Any support, whether it’s financial or moral, is welcomed and helps to give her much needed hope.
