Meet my hero and husband, Tyler Cooper. Tyler was a 19D Cavalry Scout in the US Army for 4 ½ years and served in Operation Enduring Freedom from 2011-2012 where his unit controlled everything from Ghazni to Nuristan and Kunar Provinces.
Early 2012 when he was near Ghanzi province, Afghanistan is when everything changed. During one of many missions his unit had been out on Tyler and his team had to move across a mountainside in roughly 7-8 ft of snow from their drop zone. After receiving contact multiple times Tyler found himself falling down the side of the mountain with nothing to catch his fall. He didn’t notice it right away (due to the adrenaline rushing and cold temperatures) and the mission they were on, when he fell he damaged his right hip as well as tearing ligaments in his right wrist.
Tyler had his first surgery in 2012 by a team of Army doctors. The team of doctors were still in training and the surgery didn’t go according to plan-not only did Tyler lose all feeling on the back of his right hand, he contracted MRSA multiple times from the hospital conditions.
Needless to say after that experience Tyler didn’t want the Army doctors operating on his hip. Tyler still to this day suffers pain on his hips. He describes it to me as bone constantly rubbing against bone. Those who know me know I love to run. This is something we haven't been able to do together-as Tyler struggles to walk around sometimes let alone run.
There was a time where he was receiving steroid injections weekly to stop the pain just to be able to be active outside with me. Understanding that he cannot live his life that way, Tyler is undergoing his biggest surgery to date on April 6.
At 29 he is undergoing hip surgery to have his femoral head and hip socket worked on. Doctors have to reshape both as well as repair the damage to the labrum and cartilage to his hip. It’s a 6 month minimum recovery process and the doctors say it will take 8-9 months to really start a routine up again.
I’ve seen Tyler overcome many challenges since coming home from Afghanistan, but his injury is one that’s continued to haunt him.
Tyler will not be able to work during his recovery process and the VA as we all know is slow to do anything. He is eligible for temporary disability rating increase while he recovers but this won’t kick in for months based on the slowness of their system.
Due to the slow process by the VA and Tyler's inability to work his current job until he's 100% healed , Tyler and I will rely on my income for everything coming our way these next few months.
This go fund me isn’t created to just ask for financial help. This is to ask anyone who has served our country and knows the long road to recovery to help guide Tyler through this process. Any advice is appreciated to help take his mind off of things for the next couple of months.
Those who know me know I kept 6 jobs at once last year. When people I care about are in need, I’ll do whatever I have to do to help out. I’ll do the same for Tyler.
Please keep our soldier in your prayers so this is the last time he has to face this.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to read this and who offered to keep Tyler in their prayers.
Sincerely,
The Coopers
