Patches is a gentle, sweet four-year-old Sheltie loved by Kathy and all who know her. Unfortunately, she had to have her gallbladder removed in January. Since the initial surgery, complications have arisen, leading to a second, emergency surgery four days later. A third surgery is pending, awaiting results of more testing. Patches has been in an ICU unit at a specialty referral hospital for the last two weeks, with more time anticipated over the next few weeks.

The initial costs involved were estimated to be $10 000 - $12 000, but since then additional medical costs, along with unanticipated procedures, have escalated costs closer to $30 000. While the initial costs were anticipated, the unexpected costs are proving to be more of a challenge.
