Hi! My name is Holly, owner of Pistil + Stamen. Pistil + Stamen is a queer owned floral design business based in Richmond, VA and soon to be one of two queer owned flower farms in VA. Over the summer I was lucky enough to have this giant field fall into my lap. Some friends and I spent time demolishing the old shed one the property (cut scene) to make space of a new one. That's just one of MANY plans I have in store for this beautiful space.

 

Plants and wildlife alike do a lot to provide for us without question or judgement, it feels only right to help nature flourish. It's what I love most about farming and gardening, this sacred relationship of reciprocation with nature. Part of my plan includes featuring a bee hive on the property to help encourage the bee population to thrive and pollenate our flowers. Teaching others about the importance of growing native plants will only help our ecosystems thrive, as I will include natives in my product supply. By allowing those ecosystems to thrive, we can work towards sustaining the environment and ultimately our own survival.

 

When it comes to working with flowers it's an extended form of self expression and has led to my growing affinity for green witch practices. Part of this includes learning about herbalism, how plants can not only lift our spirits but provide health benefits as well. A lot of the history of these practices are attributed to paganism from Europe but also, herbalism and medicinal practices come from Native Americans. As for green witch practices I love learning about herbalism and incorporating associated rituals and plant benefits into the everyday. Through these practices, I feel deeply connected to the land and value the gifts it gives me. Every living thing puts out energy, including plants. It is so important to be present among their energy, to care for and appreciate it. It is a means of honoring nature and ourselves. Sometimes that looks like garden meditation, making tea from a dried harvest, basket making, creating a nature shrine, or exploring the woods. Though there are many aspects to witchcraft that can be incorporated into everyone's everyday, these are the ones I choose. Wheel of the Year holidays are also important as they revolve around celebrating nature in relation to the turn of the seasons.

 

By making a contribution, you will be directly supporting the initial startup costs to help us flourish. Your support will help by contributing to the following:

 

- A shed for processing flowers, drying flowers for tea, and seed starting.

- Building and insulating a walk-in cooler within the shed for floral storage.

- Tilling the land to start 10 in-ground flower beds.

- Electricity needed to power grow lights, heat mats, an AC unit, and a CoolBot device for the cooler.

- Purchase and rental of commercial farm equipment such as a tiller, backhoe, trailer + hitch, and power tools.

- A drip irrigation system

- Industrial sized rain water tanks to supply the irrigation system.

- Landscaping cloth

- Locally produced compost

- A bee hive

- Handmade baskets harvested from wisteria vine

- A line of herbal teas grown on the farm

- A commercial volume of seeds and bare roots.

- Natural pest deterrents such as powdered coyote pee and pepper flakes.

- General farm supplies such as clippers, gardening gloves, buckets, shovels, hand tools, bulk seed starting mix, seed trays, wall shelves, a work table with cutter.

 

Your support will paive the way for Pistil + Stamen to grow into something beautiful and meaningful. It will go towards herbalism education, teaching others the value of nature and it's cultural history, supporting native plant species, employment opportunities, sustainable efforts, the bee population, bringing love and joy to local friends and families including our own!
