Help Piper Dorr Hear!
Donation protected
Aloha,
This GoFundMe account was created to help John and Jennifer Carey Dorr and their beautiful baby girl Piper. As many of you know, Piper came into this world with a series of challenges that both John, Jennifer and Piper's twin sister Lillian have all endured together. Now is our time to help donate to the Dorr's and show them how much we love them. Here is their story:
On August 16, 2015, my husband John and I were blessed with the birth of our twin girls, Lillian and Piper. Upon birth, we were informed that Piper had three congenital anomalies that we were not aware of prior to her birth. One of the anomalies was a ventricular septal defect (VSD) which is a hole in her heart; the second was a cleft palate. Both of these can be repaired with surgery, over time, and her doctors assure us that once Piper gets bigger, surgery will be possible and should be successful. The third anomaly was Microtia of the left ear. Microtia is a condition in which the external portion
of the ear is malformed and there is a narrowing or absence of the external auditorycanal.
While all of this new info about Piper was unexpected and has been a challenge for us, one of the most exciting days was in October when we learned that she does recognize sound through the bone in her left ear, meaning with the help of a hearing aid, she can hear pretty evenly through both ears. This news brought me to immediate tears as I am so grateful that our little girl will have a chance to hear us, her sister, her grandparents, her future friends, teachers, and coaches with the help of a hearing aid. With the help of the hearing aid as well as auditory and speech specialists, she will learn to speak and be able to hear and learn in school just like any other child.
Our doctors have informed us that she will need a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA) that is specifically designed for infants and children. This device can be used on babies as young as Piper and will help her develop her sounds and hearing instead of being delayed due to not being able to hear. This early intervention hearing aid is a critical device because it is in the first year that infants acquire the sounds and articulation patterns that are essential to learning their native language. The BAHA aid will immediately help her acquire verbal communication skills as well as meet everyday challenges associated with hearing and sound.
This brings us to my request. While both John and I both have health insurance, ironically, hearing devices are not covered. Hearing aids are also very expensive. Though we were prepared to meet the challenges of our new family, the fact that we were blessed with two wonderful daughters has made all of our expenses nearly double. In addition, Piper’s challenges have made it extremely challenging to make ends meet. The expense of this hearing device is immediate and even with our two incomes it is a line item that we cannot meet anytime soon.
Jennifer
