Your contribution will help transform lives in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro! Carnival 2021 has been canceled due to the pandemic but Pipas will offer young people in Rio's favelas a way to celebrate safely while creating and learning. With Rio public schools closed nearly a year, the already severe inequality in access to this type of education is worsening quickly.
Brazil's urban peripheries lack access to the creative technology education and tools necessary to participate in the 21st century economy and make its voices heard. Pipas Labs seeks to combat this systemic inequality through the development and distribution of creative technology education kits for underserved urban communities.
Our latest kit, Creative Faces, invites participants to create illuminated masks that reflect two sides of their identity while learning about creative process, identity, circuits and light. All the materials and instruction for this activity are included in the kit which will be distributed to hundreds of participants in four communities of Rio.
About Pipas Labs
Pipas Labs began in 2015 in Rio de Janeiro in a mission to transform kites into a foundation for social change. Kite (pipa) fighting, a national pastime in Brazil, is a culture of creativity, improvisation, beauty and joy. Beyond the kits, Pipas Labs runs workshops in Brazil's urban periphery and is developing a creative smart toy.
