Pinoseed: An Experiment In Seaborne Community

Donation protected
"My real log is written in the sea and sky; the sails talking with the rain and the stars amid the sounds of the sea, the silences full of secret things between my boat and me, like the times I spent as a child listening to the forest talk."

 – Bernard Moitessier, from The Long Way (1971)

My name is Peter Stridh and I am a Swedish artist, photographer, surfer, sailor, and activist. For the past four years, I have lived aboard a 32-foot sailing boat named Pinoseed, exploring connections between nomadic sea-dwellers and alternative shore-based communities on a voyage of more than 2,000 sea miles between the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas.

My travels began forty years ago, when I first found my way from Sweden to the Philippines, then South-east Asia and the east coast of Australia. The communities and lifestyles I came across in these places were all very different to those in which I'd been raised. I was immediately determined to assimilate them into a different kind of life for myself.

A decade later, married, and with three daughters, I again travelled between Sweden, the Philippines and Southeast Asia with my young family, home-unschooling my beautiful, wise children, and exploring self-sufficiency, and sustainable and small-scale permaculture.

In between, I somehow managed to attend art school, exhibit and sell my work, and expand my education in managing permaculture projects and intentional communities. The last evolved into managing an open-air space, The Green Dolphin, for music and art festivals, along with a restaurant and bed 'n' breakfast.

When my children became adults, I bought an old sailing boat, refitted it, and learned not only sailing skills, but the abilities to navigate and live sustainably on the ocean. It has altered my physical and spiritual relationship with the world.

My life and my voyages aboard Pinoseed, have connected me — in person and virtually — not only to far-flung places, but to unique people, innovative communities, and new ideas. The boat has also become a floating art-studio and an unconventional social laboratory, which connects regularly, for extended periods, with the shore.

Which is why I want to offer people from all walks of life an opportunity to come aboard as crew and collaborators — for short or extended periods — and experience small-boat voyaging and sea- steading first-hand, as well as the raw, unfettered physicality of both the open sea and remote littorals.

I want to develop Pinoseed as a mobile, seaborne platform on which to explore, create and learn — with artists, scientists, explorers, teachers, farmers, communal project managers and others coming together aboard, virtually as well as in the real world, to exchange ideas and stories of sustainable sea- and shore-based community projects.

Finally, I want to create a network — a flotilla! — of fellow sea-dwellers and sea-steaders, exploring individual, alternative, cross-cultural, sustainable ways of living and working on or close by the sea.

Towards these ends, funding of Euros 10,000 (SEK 108,697) is urgently needed:

i) to refit Pinoseed

ii) to establish and promote programs and opportunities aboard

iii) to create a newsletter and/or a podcast to bring Pinoseed's encounters and interactions to a wider audience

iv) to create space aboard for others to join me aboard to voyage with purpose.
