Pink Hair, Don't Care! SCISA Fundraiser

Hello beautiful humans!

My name is Adam Coleman (he/him) and I am a proud member of the Steel Magnolias team in the Steel City Inclusive Softball Association (SCISA). SCISA is a softball league that promotes inclusive practices for everyone involved, specifically gearing their focus on sexual- and gender-diverse populations.

This is the first year that it has been able to run (due to COVID), and I gotta tell ya, it has been the highlight of my 2021 thus far. I have made a ton of new friends. I am able to express myself with others who understand and support me as a gay man. I am always so excited for Sundays as I am with so many people who just get it. All 8 teams have built strong relationships, and I am already excited for next year.

Some individuals, however, may not have had the chance to sign up due to financial concerns. We know the devastating impacts of COVID on finances and stable income. We also know that Canadian 2SLGBTQQIA+ communities are at higher risk of poverty (for a Toronto-based study discussing this further please click here). I have heard many of my queer / trans friends discuss financial burdens and job losses when this demographic has more barriers of finding inclusive and consistent work.

That's why I want to do something about it. For my fundraiser, I want to keep representing the SCISA values of inclusivity and celebrating with pride to help pay for the registration fees for 5-10+ people. I truly want everyone to play in this environment without the barrier of payment. In return, I will be dyeing my beard pink for 5 people ($400 raised), and both my beard and head of hair for 10 people ($800 raised). When I say pink, I really mean pink. The hottest of pinks, if you will. The colour pink came from my sporting attire; my belt and cleats are pink and I have adopted this brand. I also like it because it fits the theme of inclusivity; how radical is it to mix the traditional heteronormative sport of softball and add some pink to it!?
