Piney Run Park Aviary
Donation protected
The Resident Piney Run Raptors Need A New Aviary! The estimated total cost to build this new facility is $73,000. Our goal is to raise $60,000 toward these costs. The Piney Run Recreation and Conservation Council in conjunction with Carroll County Dept. of Recreation & Parks, Piney Run Park and Nature Center staff (in Sykesville, Carroll County, Maryland) are the caretakers of five disabled raptors residing in the current aviary structures pictured above at Piney Run Park.
Our resident raptors include a red-tailed hawk, a red-shouldered hawk, two barred owls and a great horned owl. All of our raptors were injured by colliding with cars and have varying degrees of disabilities, ranging from partial wing amputations to blindness. Because their injuries prevent them from surviving in the wild, they have become permanent residents in the Piney Run Nature Center’s aviary where they have become an integral component of environmental educational programs.
The current structures (shown below) are aging rapidly and not holding up to the extreme weather conditions. As a result, the Piney Run Recreation and Conservation Council has undertaken a project to build a new facility that will better enable us to care for injured birds of prey.
The new raptor aviary (drawings below) will include an 8’ x 24’ building with 6 yards (wired enclosures) around three of the building's sides. We will use the additional yard to accept another injured bird, as there are regular requests for us to do so. The yards conform to the size standards recommended in the "Raptors in Captivity" guidebook for each species of bird that we have. There will be access to the yards from inside the building and solid walls between the enclosures to prevent the birds from seeing each other. Plumbing and electricity will be provided. Skylights will reduce the need to turn on lights. A substantial concrete foundation will be constructed for each yard’s perimeter that will be deep enough to prevent critters from digging into the enclosures. A fence will be constructed 10’ away from the wired enclosures around the entire perimeter to keep the birds a safe distance from the public.
Please help by making a donation to the Piney Run Recreation and Conservation Council. Donations can be made on this page and are also accepted at the Piney Run Nature Center Desk (410-795-6043) Tuesday thru Sunday (once it reopens) or by mailing a check with the memo note “Aviary Donation” to Piney Run Nature Center at 30 Martz Road, Sykesville, MD 21784.
Thank you for your support and please come visit us to enjoy the park and meet our raptors!
For donors who require a 501c3 status for donations, checks should be made payable to the Friends of Carroll Recreation & Parks and mailed to Friends of Carroll Recreation & Parks, 300 S. Center Street, Westminster, MD 21157. The Piney Run Recreation and Conservation Council is a member of the Friends of Carroll Recreation and Parks which has 501c3 status and donations should be earmarked for PRP Aviary.
