Pinckney Elementary is one of the oldest schools in Lawrence. With our rich history from Langston Hughes attending school here and continuing to serve students from Pinckney and Old West Lawrence neighborhoods, we recognize the importance of our impact in the community. Pinckney students are strong, resilient, and determined to make a brighter future.
Pinckney Elementary’s population is 40% students of color as well as 60% free and reduced lunch students. Our students are in need of seeing themselves in the books and media they consume throughout their school days. It is our goal to provide our students with diverse books and media for which they can find a mirror into their own lives. Additionally, it is our goal to also provide students with a window into the lives of people who are unlike them.
Pinckney Elementary was awarded a grant from the Northeast Kansas Library System (NEKLS) to help us get closer to reaching these goals. With this grant, we are able to provide more diverse books and media for our students. We are also able to provide books with a focus on anti-racism to continue the work of recognizing white privilege and institutional racism in our society.
In order to make the most of this grant, Pinckney has been given the opportunity to raise funds that will then be matched by NEKLS. This will allow us to provide our students with more books and media with a diverse and anti-racism focus into our library and classrooms.
Your donation will provide:
-Books and media featuring BIPOC
-Books and media featuring other marginalized groups such as LGBTQIA+, other abled, etc.
-Books and media about anti-racism, white privilege, and institutionalized racism
-Books and media about mindfulness and other cognitive strategies for stress and anxiety
