I am raising funds to finish creating a graphic novel adaption of Joseph Smith’s First Vision. It is called PILLAR OF LIGHT.
So many young people learn from, and are drawn to the graphic novel, illustrated format. It is a powerful way to teach. I have partnered with veteran comic book artist Sal Velluto who, aside from working for major publishers like Marvel and DC, has produced numerous comic book renditions of “The Life of the Prophets” for “The Friend” magazine.
2020 is the 200th anniversary of the First Vision and we are excited to do a telling of the story that will reach people young and old in a new and profound way. We want to inspire the youth and to build their testimonies of the Prophet Joseph Smith.
We are drawing on details from all four accounts written by Joseph Smith as well as from those who heard him tell his experience firsthand. It will include details not previously shown in the current films and visuals. For several detractors of the Church the variations in the First Vision’s accounts are proof that Joseph Smith had made up the whole story.
This project has the purpose to show, with words and pictures, that all the accounts not only harmonize with each other but provide details, often overlooked, which make the story amazingly real. Given the sacred nature of the subject matter, particular attention has been given to present certain aspects of the story in a very respectful way.
When completed, PILLAR OF LIGHT is expected to be about 24 pages. and will be MADE AVAILABLE ONLINE FOR FREE. The pages we have completed, so far can be viewed HERE.
We are looking for donors who would like to help us finish this project in time for the 200th anniversary. Your donations will be used to fund the production costs of creating the original art, which as you can see below, is done by the highest professional standards, to do justice to this story that is important to so many people. Our purpose is to provide inspirational material to help any sincere seekers experience this momentous event in an intimate and personal way.
A printed version will also be produced in 2020, Beside the 24 page Graphic Novel it will include a commentary with reference to the source material and scholarly papers. A “Making of PILLAR OF LIGHT” showing production art and photographic reference will also be included.
A separate fundraiser will be done to help finance the printed version. This GoFundMe is only to support the creation of the electronic version which will be made available on line FOR FREE.
Shown below are some of clips from the pages we have completed already. For a full view of all the pages completed, so far, click HERE.
We'll send periodical updates regarding the artwork and (eventually) the celebrations of the 200th anniversary. Thank you for your support!
