Everyone here has either seen or felt the negative effects and damage brought on by alcohol and drug abuse. It is sad to say that while we see addicts suffer, our resources to help them are limited. Effective rehabilitation in the U.S. costs between $30,000 to $40,000 per month and the longer one stays in treatment, the better chance one has at battling potential relapse. So, in a sense, an addict must have to be very well off in order to get cleaned up.
Wat Tham Krabok, a Buddhist monastery located about 81 miles north of Bangkok, offers FREE drug and alcohol rehabilitation for any patience who can make their way to Thailand. Upon admission, for the first 5 days, they must go through rapid detoxification by drinking an herbal potion that induces vomiting to cleans the body of toxins. Patience are required to stay a minimum of 7 days and allowed to stay a maximum of 28 days. There, rehabilitators are required to clean their living quarters and to sweep the temple ground. On their spare time, they are encouraged to meditate and to ponder on the teachings of Buddha.
At Wat Tham Krabok, there is a genuine compassion and a concern to offer real salvation not only to the drug addicted but to anyone who cares to help them. We hope that by raising this fund, we are bringing recognition and thanks to a non-profit organization that has been extending a lifeline to addicts since the late 1970's.
