I am raising money for my son Pierce. He is 2 years old and was involved in a car accident where the vehicle he was in with his mother was rear ended at a high speed while they were sitting still. After the impact Pierce immediately went unresponsive where he was airlifted by Maryland State Police helicopter and taking to John Hopkins Hospital. Pierce was intubated by Maryland State Police paramedics while in the helicopter before arriving at John Hopkins. He immediately went to Critical Care and then to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Pierce was put in an induced coma for 2 weeks because of severe swelling to the brain. The swelling was able to be controlled with very powerful medications while he was on the ventilator . Pierce was on the ventilator for almost 3 weeks before he was successfully weaned from the vent in slow amounts, until one day the vent was removed and Pierce was able to breath on his on. It was a touch and go moment because we were told Pierce might not come off the vent, or that he would need a trach. Pierce stayed over 30 days at John Hopkins Pediatric Critical Care Unit. Since then Pierce is at rehab but still stands the chance to go back and forth to John Hopkins for maybe more procedures, scans and appointments. Pierce's future and outcome is unknown he does open his eyes from time to time and is able to track only in front of him and briefly. He is young and is brain isn't fully developed but with his injuries there is alot of unknown because of the severity of his brain injury. He is receiving therapy which he is showing small signs of recovery he does move his arms and legs but not alot he has a NG tube but will soon probably receive a G tube while speech works with his swallowing abilities. Pierce does have a swallow but it is very slow and delayed. Pierce will need round the clock care once he does get home. All funds will go to Pierce and his continued recovery as this will be a slow and long process thank you for taking the time to read. Luckily I have been off from work since day 1 of his incident and I have been able to be by his side. It is hard to see your my son like this but just being able to be here with him and talk to him is keeping my spirits up.
