In January 2018 Pierce (age 3.5) suffered an anoxic brain injury from going into cardiac arrest, from complications of a respiratory virus called RSV. He spent several months in Denver Children's Hospital recovering. Today he continues to heal at home. He has yet to walk or talk, but all of his therapists believe he's improving. It's been a long road for Pierce.
There are very few medical options when someone suffers a serious brain injury. Time and therapy are really the only known remedies.
One treatment that we'd like to explore for Pierce is stem cell therapy.
Stem cells have been known to aid in healing many ailments in the human body. According to the Mayo Clinic, stem cells are the body's raw materials — cells from which all other cells with specialized functions are generated. Stem cells can be guided into becoming specific cells that can be used to regenerate and repair diseased or damaged tissues in people.
Uniquely, Terra, Pierce's mom, and he are a perfect match in terms of stem cell markers. The odds of this are roughly 1 in 200. It means that Terra's bone marrow can be harvested and raw stem cells can be separated out and subsequently given to Pierce, healing the damaged areas of his brain.
Unfortunately, this procedure is considered experimental and is not covered by insurance. In fact, the Department of Neurology at the University of Miami is the only entity willing to explore this option for a child's brain in the US. The treatment is expensive, ranging from $100,000 to $150,000.
We'd like to use the funds generated from the Go Fund Me site to immediately sign Pierce up for this medical treatment.
