Walking to Mordor for the Pieman PT Foundation
Earlier this year our friend Lewy took his own life. This summer, we will be taking on the National Three Peaks Challenge in his memory.
Our group of 30 will be aiming to climb the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours. That's 23 miles of hill walking, ascending 10,052ft. And to top it off, we will be doing the whole thing dressed as characters from The Lord of the Rings...
Why should I donate?
By supporting us, you’ll be helping Lewy’s family to set up the Pieman PT Foundation - which will help to empower people to thrive mentally, physically and spiritually. The Foundation will aim to contribute to education, support and intervention initiatives.
However you knew him - Lewis, Lewy, Boyd, Pie, Pieman, LAJBH, brother, son or friend - he was a special young man who had a massive impact on everyone who he knew. Quick witted, charismatic , brimming with wisdom, compassionate, honest (sometimes painfully so) and truly authentic. A comedy genius who never failed to have the whole room in fits of laughter everywhere he went. He was a best friend to many. Lewis was a talented and popular History teacher at Outwood Academy Normanby and inspired students and colleagues in equal measure.
From our collective grief we’ve found strength in each other and, together, we want to raise money in Lewy’s name - helping his family get the Foundation started. All the money donated will go towards giving them the best possible chance at creating something which will help people struggling with mental health problems in the future.
What is the National Three Peaks Challenge?
We’ll be attempting to ascend the highest mountains of England, Scotland and Wales within 24 hours. Our group of walkers will climb each peak in turn, with our designated drivers then taking us from the foot of one mountain to the next.
It’s a physically and mentally demanding challenge - and we’re a mixed group in terms of ability and experience (some of us are dangerously under-prepared). So over the next couple of months we’ll be honing our rambling skills in the great outdoors across the north east and the rest of the country.
On July 16 we’ll head north to Nevis and spend the night at Fort William before beginning our challenge the next morning. We will have around five hours to ascend and descend, before driving south to Scafell Pike. We’ll arrive at around 11pm so it will be a midnight walk up and down England’s tallest mountain. Then it's onto Mount Snowdon in Wales for the third and final peak as the sun rises.
Lewy loved the outdoors and long hikes so it felt appropriate to take on the Three Peaks in his memory.
Why The Lord of the Rings?
Quite simply because Lewy loved Tolkien’s Middle Earth. So we’re treating Mt Snowdon (the third and final peak in the challenge) as our Mt Doom. From Frodo to Gandalf, Gimli to Treebeard, and Boromir to Gollum, each of us will be dressed in full fancy dress. We’ll be vlogging the trip so you’ll be able to join us as we make our way across Middle Earth together.
